Job Title: Network Administrator I (Cloud & Infrastructure)
Location: Cheyenne, Wyoming
Employment Type: Remote, 6 months Contract to hire
Role Overview
This role is responsible for leading the design, implementation, and stabilization of a modern cloud-enabled network infrastructure supporting approximately 300 users across 7 sites. The Network Administrator I will play a key role in transitioning the organization from traditional on-premise systems to a more scalable, secure, and cloud-integrated environment using Azure-based technologies. This includes standing up new internet connectivity, implementing cloud firewalls, secure access service edge (SASE) solutions, and modern proxy systems. In parallel, the role will support Level 3 network and systems operations, ensuring reliability and performance across all locations. The position requires close collaboration with desktop support, security, and infrastructure teams in a highly cross-functional, hands-on environment.
Employee Value Proposition (EVP)
Purpose:
This role offers the opportunity to directly build and modernize the company’s core network and cloud infrastructure from the ground up. Rather than maintaining legacy systems, the individual will take ownership of critical initiatives that impact every employee across all sites, making this a highly visible and meaningful position.
Growth:
Given the small, collaborative team environment, the person in this role will gain hands-on experience across networking, cloud architecture, security, and end-user systems. This exposure provides accelerated career growth into senior infrastructure, cloud engineering, or security roles within 12–24 months.
Motivators:
This is an ideal opportunity for someone who enjoys variety, ownership, and learning beyond a single silo. The role offers the ability to work across multiple domains, experiment with new technologies, and contribute to real infrastructure decisions rather than simply executing predefined tasks.
Major Objectives
1. Design and Deploy Cloud-Integrated Network Infrastructure
Within the first 90–120 days, take ownership of designing and implementing new internet connectivity across all 7 sites, ensuring reliable and scalable network performance for 300 users. This includes configuring Azure-integrated networking components, cloud firewalls, and secure routing solutions to support business operations. Success will be measured by achieving full deployment within the timeline, maintaining minimal disruption during rollout, and meeting defined uptime and performance SLAs. This objective may be enhanced using AI-based network monitoring and configuration optimization tools to improve deployment speed and accuracy.
2. Implement Secure Cloud Access and SASE Architecture
Within 3–6 months, lead the implementation of a secure access service edge (SASE) framework, including cloud proxy solutions and identity-aware access controls. The goal is to improve security posture while enabling flexible, modern access to systems for all users. Performance will be measured by successful deployment, reduction in security vulnerabilities, and improved access performance metrics. This initiative may leverage AI-driven threat detection and traffic analysis tools to enhance security monitoring and response.
3. Lead Migration to Cloud-Based Communication Systems (Softphones)
Over a 3–6 month period, plan and execute the migration from traditional phone systems to a softphone-based communication platform. This includes coordinating with stakeholders, ensuring user adoption, and minimizing downtime or disruption. Success will be measured by full migration completion, user satisfaction, and reduced operational costs. AI-enabled analytics tools may be used to monitor call quality and optimize system performance.
4. Establish and Stabilize Core Infrastructure Services (DNS & L3 Support)
Within the first 60–90 days, stand up and optimize DNS services and provide Level 3 support for network and infrastructure issues across all sites. This includes troubleshooting complex issues, improving system reliability, and documenting processes for ongoing support. Performance will be measured by reduced incident resolution time, system uptime, and overall network stability. AI-assisted diagnostic and monitoring tools may be used to accelerate issue resolution and proactive maintenance.
Critical Subtasks
1. Assess Current Infrastructure and Define Implementation Roadmap
Within the first 30 days, conduct a comprehensive assessment of the current network, connectivity, and infrastructure environment across all 7 sites. Identify gaps, risks, and improvement opportunities, and develop a prioritized implementation roadmap aligned with business goals. Deliverables include a documented plan, timeline, and resource requirements, with success measured by stakeholder alignment and execution readiness.
2. Configure and Deploy Cloud Firewall and Security Policies
Design and implement cloud-based firewall configurations aligned with organizational security standards, ensuring proper segmentation and protection of critical systems. Collaborate with security stakeholders to validate policies and monitor effectiveness. Success will be measured by compliance with security requirements and reduction in vulnerabilities.
3. Implement and Optimize Cloud Proxy and Secure Access Controls
Deploy and fine-tune cloud proxy solutions to manage user traffic and enforce access policies. Ensure seamless user experience while maintaining strong security controls. Performance will be measured through access reliability, user feedback, and reduced security incidents.
4. Coordinate Cross-Functional Infrastructure Projects
Work closely with desktop support, security, and infrastructure teams to ensure alignment across all implementation efforts. Facilitate communication, resolve dependencies, and ensure smooth execution of projects. Success will be measured by project timelines, team collaboration effectiveness, and successful delivery of integrated solutions.
5. Develop Documentation and Knowledge Transfer Processes
Create clear and comprehensive documentation for network configurations, systems, and processes to support long-term scalability and team knowledge sharing. Ensure documentation is maintained and accessible. Success will be measured by usability of documentation and reduced onboarding or troubleshooting time for team members.
6. Monitor Network Performance and Continuously Improve Reliability
Establish monitoring systems to track network performance, uptime, and security events. Proactively identify and resolve issues before they impact users. Performance will be measured through improved uptime metrics, reduced incident frequency, and faster response times.
7. Continuously Evaluate and Integrate AI to Improve Performance
Within the first 90–180 days, take ownership of identifying how AI and automation tools can support or enhance network management, monitoring, and security operations. Evaluate opportunities to automate repetitive tasks, improve diagnostics, and enhance decision-making. Lead pilot initiatives and integrate successful tools into daily workflows, with success measured by efficiency gains, improved system performance, and reduced manual workload.
